Hitting the stands tomorrow—this cover for the latest SF Weekly. Always a pleasure to work with AD Andrew Nilsen.
Detail shot of a magazine commission I just wrapped up last week. Probably my last post for 2010, so happy holidays to all, and I hope you’ll visit the blog again in 2011. I’ve already got my first post all planned out: a tour of my studio with amazing photography from my good friend Brad [...]
It’s taken me a long time to finally post these images! Last summer, I spent an incredible morning studying several key J.C. Leyendecker Saturday Evening Post paintings up close and in person, and was able to take the following detail shots of a few of them. I’ll keep the owner’s identity anonymous to preserve privacy, [...]
My favorite part of any gig is when the printed samples arrive. It’s especially gratifying when I get to do the design on the piece as well as the illustration. I’m always given complete creative freedom on the Westmont Christmas Festival collateral, and it’s a fun challenge to come up with a design theme that [...]
Process Stories: Wise guys
1 Comment Published November 11th, 2010 in art, illustration, paintings, process, sketchesFor the third year now, I had the pleasure of illustrating and designing the poster/theme art for the Westmont Christmas Festival series of concerts. Yesterday, they experienced a new record: two of the three shows completely sold out the day the tickets became available! It all begins with the sketch. Ballpoint pen on post-it note. [...]
Last week, I had the opportunity to illustrate the cover for SF Weekly, for a story about Nancy Pelosi. It’s almost a cliché these days for illustrators to publicly praise art directors on their blogs, but in this case, I really mean it: Art Director Andrew Nilsen was amazing to work with, and his excellent [...]
The Gallery Nucleus show was great! If you haven’t been before, it gets my highest recommendation. A wonderful, open gallery space run by Wade Buchanan, with an awesome bookstore in the front. Someone was taking photos of the show and got this great shot of my Knight piece, so I’m reposting it here. Thanks to [...]
I’m heading down to ICON later this week, and am excited to be part of a group show that is tied into the conference. The exhibition is titled ICON 6: A Labor of Line, and features a great lineup of illustrators. The knight painting above is my contribution to the show, and it is for [...]
Dialogue sketchbook, pt. 4
0 Comments Published June 27th, 2010 in art, Dialogue sketchbook, illustration, paintingsFinished this over a week ago and just forgot to post until now. The latest entry in my “dialogue” with friend and fellow artist Peter Cusack. Peter’s last entry was of a farmer with some cows, so I answered with this little Halloween cow (my daughter in her first trick-or-treating costume).
Been a long while since posting, and that’s because I’ve been buried in work, much of it for this upcoming show. Hope all those reading this in the Santa Barbara area will be able to attend. 5:30-7:30 p.m. this Friday, May 14th, at the clubhouse of the Tennis Club of Santa Barbara.
